Abstract
:
Diabetes can be overwhelming for patients, as it requires life-long complex medical and lifestyle management. Despite improving medical therapies, patients continue to suffer due to non-adherence and poor self-care. Peer support has been shown to be a clinically and cost- effective means of providing ongoing emotional and informational support to those living with diabetes in the community. People with diabetes can share knowledge and experiences in a less hierarchical and more reciprocal way with each other compared to that between patients and health care professionals. In Hong Kong, peer support has been established as a feasible and useful approach to helping those living with diabetes. We aim to translate the existing research into a multi-centre peer support program, bridging clinical care with that in the community.
