Abstract
:
Aims & Objectives: Tertiary school is a formative environment in which drinking patterns are often established. Adolescent heavy drinkers are at-risk for not only short-term but also long-term alcohol-related harms since these drinking patterns may persist into adulthood. This project’s objectives are to develop and evaluate a culturally-relevant alcohol harms reduction program for Hong Kong tertiary education students. The programme would include not only informational content, but will also increase positive expectancies of alcohol-free socialization and equip students with harms-minimization skills. The target is 15% reduction in past -month binge drinking and reported alcohol-reported harms as compared with the non-intervention subjects at each assessment point. Target Group & Size: On-campus residents of 2 tertiary institutions (The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Three residence halls in each school (total sample size approximately n=2000 in 6 hostels) will be randomly selected for 3-arm intervention project with two active treatments to be compared with 2 control hostels that did not receive the interventions. Deliverables: We will deliver a hostel-based workshop at three time points (beginning (fall) middle (winter) and end (late spring) of the academic year) to randomly selected hostels in each university (4 hostels). The first arm of the intervention is comprised of brief interactive talks by health promotion workers with self-screening/referral for risky drinking, and tips given by peer educators to reduce alcohol-related harms. Monthly SMS reminders will be sent to remind students to avoid risky drinking. The second intervention arm would additionally include: 2 mocktail making social events and student-driven skills building exercises and poster competition to address alcohol expectancies and social norm perceptions (2 hostels). The third group of hostels will serve as controls and continue with usual practices. Finally, in order to engage the undergraduates, this project will sponsor a high-publicity, university-wide competition to create a short 3-minute alcohol harms reduction video for tertiary students using the preliminary findings gathered by our group. The video can be used in the future by university health services and NGOS as a sustainable resource. Key Milestones: In the first 2 months, the project team will create health talk materials. Health workshops parties will be delivered 3 times during the academic year with follow-up evaluation of drinking patterns and alcohol harms at month 3 and month 15. The video competition will be finalized by month 16. Total Support Requested: HKD 723,116
