Abstract
:
Individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) have higher rates of obesity, lower fitness levels and poorer nutrition than their counterparts and they are more vulnerable to stress. Studies indicated that people with obesity, low levels of physical activity and poor nutrition are prone to have chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and diabetes. However, there is no routine health check for adults with ID unless they have already been diagnosed with health problems. Therefore, this project aims to promote the health of adults with ID through conducting health checks and delivering a health education programme for them. The health checks include vital signs, anthropometric indices, blood glucose, blood cholesterol, and urinalysis. Participants identified to have unrecognised health problems will be recommended to seek medical consultation. The health education programme comprises of three 1-hour sessions, which will be conducted in the subsequent three weeks. Risks of obesity, physical inactivity and poor nutrition will be discussed and participants will be encouraged to adopt a healthier lifestyle through engaging in physical activities and consuming a healthy diet. Participants will be recruited from the four sheltered workshops of the Hong Chi Association, which accommodates 526 adults with ID. The participants' family carers and staff of the sheltered workshops will also be invited to attend the health education programme so as to facilitate, reinforce, and supervise the participants to implement what they have learned.
